Many large employers conduct pre-employment drug testing, and others institute Drug Free Workplace Policies (DFWP) that expand the testing. There are mixed views on pre-employment testing because of the time limitations for detection, and the availability of products that can alter results. DFWPs can be considered more necessary with high risk occupations and where there is interaction with the public. Most governmental entities require a DFWP in order to bid on contracts. As a boss, you should be aware if someone on your staff has a substance abuse problem, including alcohol which is the most common problem. Address problems quickly and compassionately, and consider consulting a professional.
